French New Wave filmmaker Anges Varda embarks on creating a filmic portrait of Jane Birkin through conversations, reenactments, and collaboration between two artists with very distinct voices and visions. Birkin’s anxieties around turning 40 sparked the creation of this film, and so Varda set out to make this film over the course of the years after her birthday, exploring that womanhood doesn’t end but can transform into something even more fantastical.

The film is assembled through imagined vignettes of Jane’s desires, fantasies, and aspirations. Varda takes us on a grand tour through Birkin’s life as a muse, singer, femme fatale, mother, martyr in imagined scenarios that are spectacularly crafted by the auteur’s surrealist, expressionist style.
